Another Kinky Romance Book with an Ace Character is Out!

This one isn’t mine. It’s Pippi’s Little Prank Day, by Allie Belle and it’s live now!

Feast or famine right? First there are hardly any kinky romance books with asexual characters and now, suddenly, there are two new ones! What a coincidence!

Well, there was a little coincidence, but not as much as you’d think. This is kind of a fun story, so I thought you might be interested in some behind-the-scenes info about how it all worked out.

About a year ago Allie Belle, who writes very popular books about Littles, approached me about writing a story that would feature a discipline-only relationship. She’d read some of the articles I’ve written that highlighted the lack of attention these relationships get in popular media, and knew I had an interest in putting more focus on them.

BDSM relationships with sex are all over the place, but the ones that don’t include that? Well, they are hard to find. So she suggested co-writing with her on a Rawhide Ranch book that would focus on an asexual character. This character would be joining a married couple as their Little and their relationship with her would be parental and not sexual.

I loved the idea and was excited about it, but we never discussed a timeline, and it was left unplanned. (Author note: I am terrible when it comes to scheduling with other people. Truly awful. No matter how much I want to do something, if you don’t pursue me for details… it will probably get lost in the chaos.)

So, when an opportunity came up for her to slip the book into her release schedule, if she wrote it quickly, she checked in to see if I minded her going ahead on her own. Of course, I totally understood. Actually, she also suggested I could jump in and write it with her immediately… but I read quickly and replied before I noticed that option.

It was probably for the best since my schedule was really tight in that moment anyway.

Now, here’s where the coincidence comes in. When I was writing Maya’s Scary Little Halloween last September, I introduced the character of Lisa. Her fascination with Maya and Rick’s relationship, and the way she seemed to crave being dominated, had me thinking about how perfect it would be to bring her into that relationship. The only problem was that Rick is absolutely besotted with Maya and I really couldn’t see him wanting to add another woman to the marriage.

And as I thought more about it… it became clear that Lisa wasn’t looking for a romantic relationship either. She wanted discipline and the chance to submit. As I was wrapping up the book, it hit me that this would be the perfect chance to introduce a discipline-only dynamic with an asexual character.

Since Allie and I hadn’t firmed up plans for the other book, I thought I might as well go ahead. My only question was whether to make Lisa a Little or not. Lisa had already said she wasn’t a Little, but sometimes people’s ideas of who they are change as they learn more about themselves.

When Allie and I talked, and it became clear she’d be going ahead with the Rawhide book on her own, it helped me to make a few decisions. First, that I would definitely go ahead with my own Ace character since it was something I still really wanted to write.

And second, Lisa would probably not be a Little. Allie was already covering that dynamic so there was no need for me to go down the same route. I may let Lisa explore that role, just to be sure, but she will remain a regular submissive.

At that point, I decided I would do another short prequel, for either Christmas or New Year’s, to set up the situation before the main book. But various delays made me realize that I needed more time, and I shifted it to Valentine’s instead. And it’s a good thing I did, since I barely ended up finishing it even in time for that.

I didn’t realize at the time, but it would mean Allie and I releasing our books within a couple of weeks of each other, which I think is awesome. And I also got the chance to be an alpha reader on her book… and trust me, it’s great! On top of that Allie is the one who designed my covers for the Sassafras books, including the new one for Maya.

So, some coincidences around the timing, but this has been something we both wanted to do for a while, and I really love how it ended up working out.

If you have an interest in asexual characters and non-sexual dynamics, you should check out both books. For those who love the steamy scenes, don’t worry both books do have sex scenes in them, the Ace characters just aren’t involved.

Since the topic of Ace kinksters has been on my mind a lot lately, I am currently working on a new article that will discuss them in a bit more detail. When my book, Lisa’s Unexpected Valentine’s Day, came out, I was surprised at the number of people who asked me what Asexual or Ace meant.

And extremely pleased at how many people who were excited to see the representation. So, I definitely think there is an interest out there for this conversation. You can join me back here in a couple of weeks for: What Does It Mean to Be Asexual and Kinky? (Title subject to change, but that’s the topic I’m going for.)

See you then!
